“A knock, a crack, the splashing of coins!”
“What kind of crack?”
“Bone breaking kind. Then the shattering of glass, wine bottles to be precise.”
“So it wasn’t blood then.”
“Oh, there was blood alright! Wine’s never that warm to the touch. But what better place for the liquids to mix? The cherry wine always leads to broken bones, if not that then broken beds. Hee-hee!”
“Stick to your damn report, old man. What happened?”
“Hah! What happened is two of my gambling buddies are dead! With just Murad left, the only one who deserved the eternal fucking darkness.”
“I can hear you Sani, ya wrinkled goat!”
“Shut it, Murad. You’re the reason the bloke made it out in the first place. I could’ve done better legless!”
“Already blind! If you were fucking legless too I’d have sold you in a poker game!”
“If both of you don’t stop your barking, I’m going to make you wish you were legless. Old-man Sani! Who and where?”
“Darius. Said that was his name. Prick’s tryin’ to get a ship to Providence.”
“To reach the capital?”
“How would I know, officer? He didn’t pour his hopes and dreams out for us. He just waltzed in here, told us we ‘owe him money for bein’ so ugly’ and the next thing I heard was a damned brawl.”
“Fucking thug!”
“You’re a fucking thug, Murad. Shut it! Oi, officer, do we get some compensation from the city-“
The door slammed shut.
“He’s gone ain’t he?”
“Yep.”
